Background: The Transition from UAM to Udyam

In June 2020, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises published a gazette notification introducing the Udyam Registration system as the replacement for the Udyog Aadhar Memorandum (UAM). This new system brought significant changes to how MSMEs are classified, registered, and verified in India.

The Udyam Registration portal was launched on July 1, 2020, and all existing UAM holders were advised to migrate their registrations to the new system. The Ministry set deadlines for migration to ensure a complete transition from the old self-declaration-based system to the new verification-based framework.

Deadline for Migration

The government initially set March 31, 2021, as the deadline for migrating existing UAM registrations to Udyam. This deadline was subsequently extended multiple times to allow more enterprises to complete the migration process. Enterprises that have not yet migrated should complete the process as soon as possible, as unmigrated UAM registrations may not be recognised for availing MSME benefits under the current framework.

Failing to migrate does not invalidate your business operations, but it may result in the loss of MSME-specific benefits and recognition that depend on having a valid Udyam Registration Number.

Why You Should Migrate: Key Advantages of Udyam Registration

QR Code Verification

The Udyam Registration certificate comes with a dynamic QR code that allows instant verification of the enterprise's registration status. Any bank, government department, or business partner can scan the QR code to verify the authenticity and current status of the MSME registration in real time. This feature eliminates concerns about fraudulent or expired certificates and provides a level of credibility that the old UAM system could not offer.

Auto-Populated ITR and GST Data

One of the most significant improvements in the Udyam system is the integration with Income Tax and GST databases. The Udyam portal automatically fetches investment and turnover data from the enterprise's ITR filings and GST returns. This auto-population feature ensures that the enterprise classification (micro, small, or medium) is based on verified financial data rather than self-declared figures, making the registration more reliable and reducing the scope for misrepresentation.

Identity Document for Banks and Financial Institutions

The Udyam Registration certificate serves as a recognised identity document when approaching banks and financial institutions for credit. Banks use the Udyam Registration Number to verify MSME status when processing loan applications under priority sector lending, CGTMSE (Credit Guarantee Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises) scheme, and other MSME-focused credit programmes. Without a valid Udyam Registration, enterprises may face difficulties in accessing these credit facilities.

Online Access to Government Benefits

Numerous central and state government schemes for MSMEs now require a valid Udyam Registration Number as a prerequisite for application. Enterprises with only a UAM registration may be unable to apply for or receive benefits under schemes related to technology upgradation, market development, cluster development, and other MSME support programmes. Migrating to Udyam ensures uninterrupted access to these benefits.

Additional Benefits of the Udyam System

  • Permanent registration: Unlike the UAM which had validity concerns, the Udyam Registration Number is permanent and does not require renewal. The enterprise classification updates automatically based on financial data.
  • Single registration number: The Udyam system assigns a single, unique registration number to each enterprise, eliminating the problem of duplicate registrations that existed under the UAM system.
  • Simplified process: The migration and registration process is entirely online and requires only an Aadhaar number to initiate, making it accessible to enterprises across the country.
  • Dynamic classification: Enterprise classification automatically adjusts based on updated financial data, ensuring that the registration always reflects the current status of the business.

How to Migrate from Udyog Aadhar to Udyam

The migration process is straightforward and can be completed online:

  1. Visit the Udyam portal: Navigate to the Udyam Registration portal and select the option for migrating an existing UAM registration.
  2. Enter your UAM number: Provide your existing Udyog Aadhar Memorandum number to initiate the migration process.
  3. Aadhaar verification: Enter the Aadhaar number of the proprietor or authorised signatory and complete OTP-based verification.
  4. Verify enterprise details: Review and update your enterprise information, including business name, address, NIC codes, and activity descriptions.
  5. PAN and GSTIN linkage: Provide PAN and GSTIN details to enable auto-population of financial data from government databases.
  6. Submit and receive Udyam number: Upon successful submission, you will receive your new Udyam Registration Number and certificate.

Recovery Options: Mobile and Email

If you have lost access to your original UAM credentials or cannot recall your UAM number, the Udyam portal provides recovery options. You can recover your registration details using:

  • Mobile number: If the mobile number linked to your UAM registration is still active, you can receive an OTP to verify your identity and access your registration details for migration.
  • Email address: Similarly, the email address registered with your UAM can be used to receive verification codes and recover your registration information.

In cases where neither the mobile number nor the email address is accessible, you may need to contact the District Industries Centre (DIC) or the MSME Development Institute in your region for assistance with the migration process.

What Happens If You Do Not Migrate?

Enterprises that do not migrate their UAM to Udyam Registration may face the following consequences:

  • Inability to access MSME benefits that require a valid Udyam Registration Number.
  • Banks may not recognise the old UAM certificate for processing Priority Sector Lending applications.
  • Exclusion from government procurement opportunities that mandate Udyam Registration.
  • Loss of eligibility for filing delayed payment cases on the MSME Samadhaan portal.
  • Inability to participate in government MSME schemes and incentive programmes.
Migrating from Udyog Aadhar to Udyam Registration is not merely an administrative formality. It is essential for maintaining MSME benefits, accessing institutional credit, and ensuring your enterprise is recognised under the current government framework.
